What catfish is this

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No.
Not because it's a lot of money, but because it looks too emaciated. The proportions look odd. Like it didn't fed well over a longer period.
I thought it looks very thin, especially for a cat, but since I am not a catfish guy didn't feel my thoughts about that were educated enough.

Yup. I have never understood this. Giant catfish in the wild and never seen more than 1 footer in captivity and moreover they are reported not to grow much past 1ft. Regardless of the colors. I am speaking base color anyway.

80 inches not counting the tail!!!

The rest of the species indeed don't exceed 1ft by much. Maybe it's an ID mishaps. Balaji on Planet Catfish should know. He is an Indian catfish expert and kept more than one species of Rita.
A sacerdotum
Kingdoffishcraft Kingdoffishcraft what size is this guy?

So the size won't tell us anything.

Have you asked Balaji or are you confident in your ID? Not a dig. Sorry. IDK anything about you.

Some useful input from a nice peer from Mangalore, India (via YouTube).

that_Counselors_fishes: also some interesting variation of fishes that do come in stock in the market such as the albino Rita Rita catfish… would love to grow one out in the future and document it.

Fish-Story: Are you "TheKingOfFishCraft" on the MFK who was just recently asking about an albino or some kind of leucitic Rita??

@that_Counselors_fishes: nah, I'm not really that active on MFK, just lurk around for fish keeping tips on there, but never really posted there, don't really remember my name there either. My good name though is Anthony.

Fish-Story: Have you seen this? (this thread)

that_Counselors_fishes: just saw the post, yes that's definitely an Albino Rita Rita if it's from India, in India at least the albino ones so far have all been wild caught itself, not specifically bred for, so you only get to see a hand full of them come for sale once in a year, i am in contact with a supplier who gets this so this is what he had mentioned 🙌 i definitely plan on getting one next year growing it out and seeing it's actual potential even though the thread does indicate the specimens kept in tanks don't get beyond a foot, I'd love to put that to the test for sure 🙌

Fish-Story: On the Rita, thank you for more info. I think I'll copy your input in the thread for everyone's benefit. The OP thinks it might be a Rita sacerdotum too. The asking price is jaw dropping. IDK if you realized but TheBiggerTheBetter in the thread was me :D Yes, it'd be truly awesome to shed more light on the shocking disparity between the enormous wild max sizes of rita and sacerdotum and the meager sizes we see in captivity. Maybe someone's already elucidated it and IDK.

that_Counselors_fishes: I am sure someone will have a specimen that's bigger, just not well documented and since they're Indian native species not a lot of people who know their value and keep them in India itself unfortunately and usually just exported to other countries which again rarely document their growth either.
