When I first started my 46 bowfront, all the algea that grew was brown. The lighting is a single 30" coralife 50/50 bulb. Now there is some green and purple algae growing on the front of the tank in the sand, but there is still brown algae growing on the walls? How do I get nice algea bc I just bought some live rock.

too much nutrients and too much light, I believe...

Definitely too high of concentration of nutrients. Brown algea actually isn't photosynthetic though...so it will grow even in poor lighting conditions.

A good protein skimmer will clear that up in no time.

Can you recommend a good protein skimmer for a 75 gallon tank? I will be doing water changes often so I don't need a top of the line one.

A good skimmer will help with your problem but not eliminate it. Brown algae can be caused by a lot of different factors including certain types that feed off the glass wall of the aquarium. One thing that would help with a lot of the problem is a UV sterilizer. Like the skimmer, you get what you pay for. Even with the frequent water changes, I would still get the best stuff you can buy.

Get the Prizm deluxe skimmer and put some agitation on the surface and the bottom of the water. Make sure the media is in right. Vaccum the botom and dont buy any rock till it is all gone cause it can take it over and kill it. I had the same prob. when i was setting up a tank for someone.
