I am wondering what causes that cotton fungus to grow on fish and why will it attack only one fish in the tank. How does a person get rid of it and can it be prevented. Plus latley we have had a out break of ich even in tanks with bare bottoms every tank has its own filter system so it is not caused by a common sump.

I know what methylene blue is but what is PP. Will the methylene blue cause the fish to go sterile or is that just something that can happen when eggs are treated. I read on an oscar forum that oscars can be hard to breed decause the eggs are often treated with methylene which causes sterility is this true?

Mostly caused by dirty water...just keep up with your weekly water changes and vacuum the gravel real good and you shouldn't have to worry about it, it attacks fish with weaker immune systems. Treat with aquarium salt.

Edit: didn't see you said there is no gravel in your tank...still good to do weekly water changes even if the bottom of the tank is pretty clean

Not sure which you are talking about there clownknife the ich problem or thefungus. Does pure salt with a anti caking agent work as aquarium salt.

Was talking about the fungus...and no, don't use pure salt/table salt with an anti caking agent. Just get some aquarium salt at your LFS or online...much safer and won't kill your fish, it is known to treat many fish illnesses including ich.

Yes you can use iodized table salt but its cheaper to pick up some pickling salt or icecream salt. PP is potassium permanganate

We have been using pickling salt with great success my wife picked up a 45 pound bag of this high grade salt at our local farm store hoping it would work. Our biggest worry is the anti caking agent other wise it is the same as pickling salt. I have heard of PP before just can't recall what it was used for.

You will save a pile of money with the pickling salt and it is not iodized. I am wondering now how much of th pp does a person use to treat the water. We have a big jar of it left over from our water filter and I could use it.
