hi,i have a 100 gallon tank with the following inhabitants

1 x 11" odoe(very gentle)only hates any similar looking fish
1 x 10-11" senegal
2 x 8" delhezi's
1 x 8" ornate

the ornate will go sometime in the future when he gets a bit bigger,or,if i find a suitable cichlid.as the polys take their time to eat(when they feel like it lol) and the odoe usually has a large meal every 2-3 days, what cichlids(if any)could fit in with what ive got.it must be a single specimen, not too boisterous.

would something along the african theme(livingstonii etc) be a better bet,or,would something like a severum etc be a better choice.my ph is approx 7.5,water temp approx 28oC.

thanks mark.

Compatibility, the reality
When asked "will they get along ?" Sometimes the answer is as simple as yes or no, The truth is we speak in generalities some fish in theory should be ok together some not.The long broad sweeping statements are flawed as they are generalities I think we all know generalities are just opinions , but because we are dealing with animals each with its own personality its flawed. This question is harder with predatory fish, due to their natural habits ,predation! where they naturaly feed on the smaller , the weaker and the sick, claim territory and defend it . The actual answer is we don't know it's our best guess that they should or shouldn't get along.I know one of my bichirs is highly agressive which is completely different from what i have been told, so he's in his own tank , my others all conspecifics seem fine together which is oppisite from what i have read and been told. Its a case of trial and error to some extent and depends on the individual animal. When introducing a new animal into the territory of an established animal try rearanging the tank it tends to remove reference points for territoriality but most important watch for trouble and stop it before it goes to far.

I have Guinacara sp. Rio Caronis with mine, and they're fine. They can be a pain in the ass when breeding, and that's why I'm phasing cichlids out of this tank in favor of bichirs and Ctenopoma. The Guinaicaras don't take up too much of the tank when they're breeding, so in my experience, they're tolerable. I also like how they're attractive, but not so flashy that they take away from all of my other shades of brown and gray in the tank.

i have two separate community tanks with bichirs and cichlids living in harmony. i'm keeping my bichirs with Tilapia zillii, "Cichlasoma" pearsei, Paratheraps guttulatus, Hypselacara temporalis, Oreochromis aureus. all the cichlids are full grown adults, while the bichirs are adults and half grown specimens.
