What combination Mbuna?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally I have a 150 gal with about 35 Mbuna, quite a variety. I also have 2 jewels, 2 golden algea eaters, 1 pleco, and 1 Krib. There are about a dozen fry (that I have seen) of varying ages in there. I have found that having enough rocks is very helpful in solving territorial issues. I have witnessed some fighting, but mostly everything is peaceful (no deaths or significant injury). You can view the pics of my 150 in my gallery.

mayashun, your tank would look really fantastic if you removed the pink and red stuff. I would also suggest you look at putting on rock formation backing strip to the tank.
I like the selection of fish you have. They look to be in good shape.
:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2 :headbang2

Thanks Scotty, I have been looking for a new backing...have wanted to change up the scenery for awhile now. I have to leave the pink plant in there for awhile, I have kenyi fry living in it.

Take it out and give them a new rock formation. They won't miss it. Some minor changes will really create an amazing tank.
If you look at my gallery pic's you can see how effective a rock backing is. The thiird photo looks as though the rocks blend in.
Far nicer than the coloured floral arrangements you get.

IMO, if you want a long term Mbuna tank this is what I would do...
Lots of rocks. River rock, lace rock, Holey Rock, even Pagoda Rock (because it stacks really well). Make high stacks of rocks, too.
The rocks have an awful lot to do with the success of your tank...including, but not solely, being a great source of food when algae starts to grow on them.
I would start with juveniles.
Starting up a tank with all very young fish makes them get along better than starting with all adults...or half adults and half juvies.
Do not get "like colors"...
If you get a pair or a trio of Kenyi then getting an other "yellow" colored or "blue" colored fish can be bad for the tank, as similar colored fish will sometimes go at each other.
A nice starter tank, IMO, would include a group of juvenile Demasoni, Yellow Labs and a nice OB, for instance a Labeotropheus or Fulleborni (sp?) group. At least six of each would do the trick.

Just my 2 cents.

Either a bunch of different colored males or 3 breeding groups of different colored mbuna.lots of rocks and caves for either
