Hi guys, i want to share and idea.. i've been considering what business i have to do in 1 or 2 years time from now somewhere in indonesia. and opening a monster fish store has been passed on my mind. i have empty 3th storey 225 meter2 building from my grandpa old office.i love freshwater fish

the concept:
type of fish(freshwater monster) from import and local
-gars
-bichirs
-cichlid
-channa
-arowana
-datnoid
-plecos
-oscars
-catfish
- other hardy

-Well known clean and tidy LFS(hope to be one of the favourite)
-i want to organize each tank only tank species and maybe 1 or 2 pleco
start with hardy freshwater fish
-level 1 for tropical and level 2 for subtropical(since level 2 will be using aircon)
-2 main tank sizes 4feet for bigger fish and 3 feet for smaller fish
-good and cheap quality for the equipment
-etc

i would love to hear your opinions about the main core things(not interested in details first) that monster fish store should start with.ignoring the busines perspective. if the things within range of capability.. i'll put it as 1 of my business plan..
Or maybe u can tell me what u hate about your fish store? :headbang2

thanks guys!

You may have a weight problem opening a pet store off ground level, especially if you plan on keeping larger species.

use sponge or box filters as filtration for tanks that are not show tanks

cheap and gets the job done

This topic has been brought up here on MFK many times

Using the search function I found:

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/search.php?searchid=8054475

Check out the threads listed for a wealth of information.

The only other thing I might ad is:

How is the water quality in the area where you are planning?

Electricity rates? Consistent electricity?

Earthquakes?

Suppliers?

I wish you well in your endeavor!

My bad i didn't search before... thanks for the reply i'll go through thread by thread that post the same topic. if i have question i'll post in here later on.. thanks guys :)
electricity rates is ok.. for supplier i'll search later on when i finished searching with all the set up and maintenance.. electricity consistency is one big problem.. gg..

I think, at least here in the US, fish stores make very little money on fish, and way more profit on fish supplies. Tanks, food, decor, pumps, sumps, air stones, etc are where the profit is. Fish and Food are what keep people coming back.

You seem to have a fair amount of space available. If I read your post correctly, you have 3 floors each 225 m2? With that space, I would at least research a breeding program for as many fish as you can. If you breed the fish, the babies are almost 100% profit.

Secondly, don't get hung up on just monster fish. Guppies are cheap to breed, and people love them. You don't make a ton of profit on each one, but you'll sell them by the 100's. Sell the fish people want to buy, don't try to make people buy the fish you want to sell.

If you do open one get genratores i wok at a lfs and the power when out one night light, fillter, and chash regstires went out so get genrators trust me

I agree with Kallmond, too. I'd be very tempted to stock all sorts of fish *I* thought were awesome and be tempted to not stock fish I didn't care for, like goldfish.

I actually don't have a LFS at all here in Reno... just petco and petsmart. We used to have one, but they went under. They had many fish that were impossible to get anywhere else in town (also tanks in sizes that were unavailable elsewhere) but lacked commonly available fish like plecos, guppies, goldfish, and oscars. They even sold full-grown arowanas and had a huge saltwater collection, too.

I was sad when I found out it was gone, but at the same time I could understand why. They didn't appeal to beginning fish keepers at all.
