Hey guys

Having some issues with a 12" female motoro, about a week ago she stopped eating and since then has only eaten maybe 3-4 small pieces of fish/shrimp. About four days ago she was swimming up and down the glass in a stressed out manner and from about three days ago till now she has become completely lethargic and pale, literally sitting in the same spot for 12hrs at a time. Her gill slits on one side seem to be slightly red/inflamed and she appears to be only breathing through the other normal looking side.

The only changes that have taken place in the last week have been the addition of salt (6 days ago) at 1g/L and feeding some frozen sardine fillets (food grade). I thought the salt may have irritated her so did a 50% water change the day after noticing her swimming up an down the glass in a stressed out manner.

At the moment she has been separated from the others but is still in the same tank, there has been no sign of improvement. The tank is 180G (was going to order two 350G ponds this week but now...) with two other smaller motoro's. It receives a 50% water change every 3-4 days with the water temperature matched and prime added to the tank. All other rays look fine, are eating and active as usual.

I'm at a complete loss as to what could be wrong, the only ideas I've had are either stress from the male who was hassling her and tried to breed a few times, or copper from using the hot water system to temperature match the water.

Water parameters 3 days ago, all tested with roughly 6 month old API test kits
pH: 6.8
NH4: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: 40-60

Yesterday
pH: 7.2
NH4: 0 (although there may be a very slight amount since the colour for 0 doesn't seem as bright as usual)
NO2: 0
NO3: 10-20

Towards the bottom of the photo you can see some red on the gill slits, I would guess this is from ammonia but I tested 0 for it when I first noticed it.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

I should also add there is three filters on the tank, an eheim 2250, 2260 and 2080XL two packed with eheim media and one with pond matrix. The female also gave birth to one pup about two weeks ago, I was told by the previous owner that she had usually had 4-6 pups each time in the past.

Looks like some type of bacterial infection. Also huge pH swings from 6.8 to 7.2 are not good for your fish. I would start doing daily water changes and hope the fish improves.

Thanks Joe, the change in pH took place over three days due to 50% water changes. Will be sticking with daily water changes and lots of hoping she pulls through for the mean time and will consider adding something for the possible bacterial infection once she seems strong enough to handle meds.

Update:
Small increase in movement today (after being told she appeared to be dead this morning). Seems to be breathing through both sets of gill slits now but not as strongly as usual, the red/inflamed area seems to be mostly gone. Did a 30% water change with straight cold water yesterday and added API stress zyme along with 0.5L of carbon and 500ml of CupriSorb to a filter. Still no interest in food (live worms, live glass shrimp, whitebait).

Another thing I've noticed is that when she swims up the glass, it almost looks like she's straining to defecate as her cloaca looks like its pushing outwards. Not sure if this just has something to do with the muscles used when swimming or because she's become so skinny its just become noticeable and is normal.

Water parameters at present
pH: 7.2
NO2: 0
NO3: 20
NH4: 0

I'm thinking that if she is still alive in a day or two and is acting a bit more normal, I should add some epsom salts in case there is some sort of blockage which is responsible. I'm wondering if it's possible that there is a dead/unborn pup that she is unable to expel which might be causing this? I'm thinking this since it seems strange that she gave birth to only one small pup which seems out of the ordinary for her.

Again any input, thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks
Brett
