What could I do with this

It's a 40 gallon. Im going to replace the heater that's in there and plan to use a sponge filter. Would a sponge filter work the same way if I used a powerhead instead of an air pump?

If you're just doing a sponge filter, you probably should keep the bottom substrate free.

Yes you use a power head on a sponge filter. You could also make a filter out of a 20 oz soda bottle and some filter floss and bio balls or whatever you use for biomedia
