I did a very large water change today in my tank and now that i have been away from home all day i come home to discover that my piranhas have lost almost all color and are now whute and swimming at a slight angle and will not eat..When i changed my water did i take too much of the good bacteria out?. I also scrubbed the sides of my tank to remove the brown alage problem and then added proper amouts of tap water chemical and the proper amout of algae kill.......IS there anything i can do like put some of my old water back in "i kept it in a bucket"????? Help me please i dont wanna loose these guys.

normally just try to do a 20-30% water change.

RB's lose color at night when they "sleep" and will regain their color in the morning once they wake up some more.

they also lose their color when they are stressed which could be because of the water change.

I have my lights on a timer and one hour after the lights go off their bellies lose the red color and one hour before the lights go on their bellies are bright red and actively swimming, its normal.

its also normal for young serras to swim at an angle because it is less likely for a predator "you" to see them, so I dont think its that wierd that pygos are doing it as well. Keep an eye on them and let us knw how it goes.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone.. I woke up this morning and they were still white as ghosts so i fed them and went out to lunch and i have just re-arrived home to discover that they are back to normal and with very very vidid red bellies..Now the progress of setting up my new tank begins so these guys can have plenty of swimming room...Thanks everyone:)

yea, that algea ill will do you in. Next time you do a big water change, if you have power filters, leave the bags in, and put new ones in or rinse old ones the next day. They hold bacteria.
