I took a close look in my tank where my fish have a spot cleared to the bottom of the tank and there are little microscopic white things crawing around the bottom looking like leaches. I feed them worms and wondering if these are babbies that hatched? Doubt it they would have drowned. Is this a fish fluke? They are light sensitive. Are they harmful to my fish? How do I get rid of them? I am assuming salt. How did I get them? My fish lost their appititites about a couple of weeks ago and dont seem as aggressive and wondering if this is the cause. My fish look healthy just lost thier appitites a little.

I don't remember what they are called but if they are what I think they are they are harmless. They appear in the tank when it starts to get dirty, like if your fish stopped eatting. Clean you tank and do a good gravel vac and add some salt and they should go away also cut down a bit on feedings for a few days.

Thanks for the info on my little water maggots. I just wanted to make sure they dont harm my fish. I didnt realize how dirty the bottom was the other day when I vaccumed it. I'll salt the **** out of the little bastards and give it a few days.

Thats them. How the hell did they get in my tank?

You usually get them if you're overfeeding. Cut down on the feedings and gravel vac thouroughly. Switching to sand from a gravel substrate will benefit because sand is much cleaner...everything doesn't sink in.

Changing to sand wouldn't help because he doesn't gravel vac properly anyway. To prevent this from happening in the future make sure you gravel vac really well, there should be no gunk left in the gravel after you vac. If you find it hard to gravel vac 100% of the gravel in one go, break it up into sections and do half one day and half another and on one of those days you might want to take out 25% of the water on the other just top up what ever comes out during gravel vaccing. HTH
