Had a small jewel cichlid die a couple of days ago and saw a small red worm on him. The worm was as small in diameter as sewing thread and a bright red color. it was 1/4 inch long near the anus which was gone. have not been able to get a ID. Every time i find (the culprit) i cross check it through google and find nothing. what is it. If it matters i have well water.
sorry no pictures

125 gallon
200lb cichlid sand
holy rock
6 (now 5 jewels) 2-2.5 inches
6 clown loaches 4 inches
4 shell dwellers
2 (1 is MIA) sunshine peacocks 1.5 inches
1 2.5 inch 7 bar frontosa
1 4 inch Chinese algae eater

We have a winner. thank you what have you done/what are you doing to fight this.

Is this what might have killed my fish or was it a coincidence that it died and had this thing?

ack its a pain in the back side..and easy to spread around to other tanks!.

It is probably what killed your fish.

I use Levamisole following the link above

It is hard to come by..your best bet is to go to your feed store and ask for Prohibit..its a is a sheep and pig dewormer

The basic killing dosage for Levamisole HCl is 13 ppm.

5 grams in 100 gallons provides this. The crystalline powder is easy for anyone with a gram scale to weigh out but if you don't have one, then dissolve the powder and do the measuring by volume.
Here's how:

1. You need to know how much water you need to treat. If it is 100 gallons then it's 1 package and no problem. If it it less than that or a multiple then dissolve the powder in ten (10) units of water.

2. 10 units may be 10 teaspoons or 10 ounces or ten tablespoons, or it could be even 100 Milliliters that's 10 centiliters. Some way you can divide up the solution into equal parts later on.

3. 10 units will now treat 100 gallons of aquarium water. 1/10th of that will treat 10 gallons. that means that one of those measures, teaspsoons, tablespoons, etc. will treat 10 gallons. So you could spoon out the exact amount of medication for your aquarium. 2 spoon full for 20 gallons and 3 for 30 gallons.

Email me if you are still confused.

Nothing else will kill this worm...if you cant find any contact this guy..he can send you some

Here is a recent thread from another fish forum on the subject: http://nycichlids.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=15528

..yeah but that has nothing about treatment..he just put all the fish down and nuked the tank..

After tons and tons of research time and energy put in to saving my tanks for this parasite levamisole is the only thing i have found that works.

good luck with your fish.

do i need to remove the carbon from the filters and will this hurt any plants or crustaceans i think when i get it i will treat all of my tanks (community, african cichlids (including babies), planted shrimp and predatory all are scale less fish (black ghost knife and peacock eel)

I would remove the carbon and keep the lights off while treating, I treated my sculpin she is scaleless with this as well as a tank with red cherry shrimp and a marbled cray , MTS, ramshorn, and Brig snails all came threw with no harm, as well as all of my plants.

just remember to make sure you re dose..this only kills the worms and the water change after treatment is VERY important to suck up any possible eggs to reinfect the fish.

good luck!!
