I think we don't give animals (ie: anything other than humans) enough credit!

I think my fish definitely regard me as some sort of living animal that appears and usually something exciting happens when that happens... food, a water change, something different.

They definitely know we are another animal, as they would if they saw other fish or predators outside of the water. It is cool to think that they have grown accustomed to us :D

Compared to what? A human? Of course.
Fish only need to as smart as what they need to survive. If all they need to do in the wild is escape predators, eat vegetation & crustaeceans, spawn with another mate and scatter the eggs then there isnt much more thier brain can handle. Fish learn where the food is and comes from, from repitition.

I'd never compare fish to humans... but to other animals
