I have always always wanted an oxydoras/psudodoras niger catfish but never dare get one because i havnt yet and dont like the idea of buying a fish i cant house for life. However. i intend to have a much larger tank in a couple of years so my question is.:

What do you all think about me buying a niger cat for my 350G tank?? Its 96"long 30"deep and 30"tall if i get one it should be ok in here for most of its life right??? Am i right in thinkng it takes them a long time to top 24" or even 30"??

Moved to the catfish area for you. You should get some great responses in here.

I'm with you about housing fish for life. In your situation, you have a nice sized tank but it is not big enough for the catfish you want at its adult size. Having the intent to upgrade in the future is great, but you never know what the future holds and that upgrade may not happen.

With that said, I don't see why your 350 wouldn't last a long time for the Niger Cat. Keep in mind that I don't know what their growth rate is but I'm willing to bet that it would take a couple of years to get to 30 inches in length.

I would go for it and hope that your plans to upgrade in the future come true.

i got one in my 300 uk gal (about 350 us) at 16in that came out of 1500 gal - grew it to 29in in under a year -had to let it go (back in 1500).

Holly shhh thats fast! maybe ill just look for a lithodoras dorsalis (doubt ill find one though) they get 2ft but not too big.
How about Bacu (pterodoras granulosus) they in theory get as big if not a little bigger but i have yet to see OR hear of one that is larger than 24"??

I gave up trying to find a Lithodoras but maybe they are easier to find in your area.Have you considered the Megaladoras Irwinii ?I think they are the most attractive of them all and I dont think they grow as big as a Niger.

Haha also i have 2 megalodoras, did have 4 but 4 was too many for the filters lol. i love them but fancied something a bit more monster, megalodoras seem to get stuck at the 14" mark:cry:

I actually have a Niger that I've had for about a year now.It was at least four inches at the time of purchase, now it's twice that size maybe bigger. It is not very active, only comes out in the deepest, darkest night so it only gets to eat whatever left overs it can find along with the pellets that I drop in for it.It is growing slowly due to the ammount of food it gets but I plan to keep it as long as I can.
