I was recently in a store asking about a fish that had no label on its tank but the employee proudly told me that it was a vampire tetra and that it was priced at one hundred dollars but could tell me nothing else about it.This term seems to be all over the place and it annoys me that sellers are content to use it no matter which species it is that they have.

That's crazy, $100.00 and they can't tell you anythhing about the species. For the money I want some info.

I knew what they were(a few of them in the tank)and tried to explain the whole name thing but she just sauntered off to another aisle.

ya they dont care... they just know it looks cool and hope they can get alot of $$ for it

the name vampire tetra is a catchy name and prob the most popular hobby name for them.

Yeah, and it just seems lazy of the dealers to hang their hats on the term without even researching what comes in. I wish we could ban the use of that name lol.

What store had "Vampire Tetras" in philly?
I gotta go!

I've seen all types of silly crap..... Bucktooth tetra, Sabertooth characin.. red tail scombs, yellow tail scombs, so much misinformation and misidentification out there, If you don't know what it is you have no business selling it..I don't think vamp tetra is good cause the teeth protrude from the bottom....Vamps teeth are on the top. Armatus, Tatauia, and Scomberoides are the only names I can relate to.

The whole point of the "common name" is for the average consumer who likely doesn't know or care about the scientific classification.
Tetra is just a lame blanket classification for any characin with an adipose(sp?) fin. But the average consumer does not know that. They think tetra means, small community fish, and easy to care for. While this does ring true for most tetras, it is not the case with payara (or exodons for that matter)
Now to find a way to get it changed. Lol
