I have 4 snails in my planted tank (1) Golden Apple Snail (2) & (3) Zebra Nerites, I think (3) unknown brown snail with black dots.

So far they have just been eating what they can get in the tank, but I wan to start feeding them so they can live longer and get nice and big.

I know they eat most veggies and fruit, but I just tried a piece of some fruit that I was eating and it floated ... not much help if you're a snail. :grinno:

Can anyone suggest something easy for me to feed them that won't foul up the water? Also, they need some source of calcium for their shells, but I don't want to mess with the pH ... any ideas for that?

Thanks for the help!

My snails chow down on my wisteria.

Howdy,

Snails will happily eat any food that hits the ground ... catfish pellets, flakes, you can also try cucumber (weigh it down with something) or lettuce rinsed with boiling water. Plecos love that, too. Yum.
The only time you have to be worried about their shells is when you run an extreme softwater tank (e.g. breeding neon tetras). The snails will simply not like it there ...

harleys right about the soft water itll eat a hole in their shells i fed algae wafers to mine and some cuttle bone for birds as a calcium supplement

Doesn't the calcium from the cuttle shells raise the pH though?

Isn't there any food they eat that contains calcium?

Thanks!

I haven't been able to get my Nerites to eat anything but algae, so I just keep the lights on longer so they get more food. Apple snails will eat anything. You can feed them Elodea, since it is cheap. I know spinach has lots of calcium, but I haven't tried it. I have a substrate that has shells in it so there is calcium in the water. I'm not sure if they have to eat it, or if they can absorb it through the water.

I have tried spinach before - mixed results, and quite a mess, lol. They don't necessarily have to eat massive amounts of calcium rich foods in order to maintain. They will absorb some needed C from the water - given that you add calcium supp.
