What do you guy's think about these ? Bio Balls !!

I have never used these befor and would like your input on them i've just bought a brand new Fluval FX5 and would like to know what this media is like check it out in the link.

I'm going to buy some ceramic rings in any case just wondered if these are better or worse ???

If you're looking for some heavy duty bio-material to put in that filter, go with plastic kitchen scrubbing pads. The ceramic rings are very expensive when compared to these inexpensive scrubbing pads. And, the pads provide more surface are for bacteria to adhere to.

Is that the nylon pot scrubbers your on about in the chart above ?

I have used similar things to them befor thanks for the heads up i'll go out and buy a load for the middle and bottom basket and i think i'll get some ceramic rings for the top basket.

i have the pot scrubbers in my sump and they work really well. Should do a good job in the fx5

nice info!!! thought bio-bale was the best. well seems to break the theory of expensive is better... cheap ones can be much better with a little bit of correct info..though it doesn't look as great its cheaper and besides the tank is the show not the sump.

I don't know anything about the FX5, but is its like other canisters, then theres no access to air, which in that case, lava rock or ceramic rings would be better in a fully submersed environment.

Bioballs and pot scrubbers work best in W/D type situations where there is access to O2.

I believe STREET CYPHER is correct -reguarding oxygen exposure and your media choice.

Please note: if you are going to go to the mess hall for your media, make sure it does not have ANTI-MIRCO BACTERIA (or the like) additives to the plastic! This can go against what you are trying to accomplish.
