If you're looking for some heavy duty bio-material to put in that filter, go with plastic kitchen scrubbing pads. The ceramic rings are very expensive when compared to these inexpensive scrubbing pads. And, the pads provide more surface are for bacteria to adhere to.

Is that the nylon pot scrubbers your on about in the chart above ?

I have used similar things to them befor thanks for the heads up i'll go out and buy a load for the middle and bottom basket and i think i'll get some ceramic rings for the top basket.

I believe STREET CYPHER is correct -reguarding oxygen exposure and your media choice.

Please note: if you are going to go to the mess hall for your media, make sure it does not have ANTI-MIRCO BACTERIA (or the like) additives to the plastic! This can go against what you are trying to accomplish.
