I don't want gold fish or something lame. I was thinking maybe saltwater or a planted tank, but I know nothing about either. What do you guys think?

Do more research, the fact that you would even think goldfish and 10g shows you need to learn more. you could do a.pretty neat low tech planted tank with pfs or flourite, anubias, java ferns, etc. put a small piece of driftwood and stock with a beta or some ottos and cardinal tetrasaybe even a bn pleco. just don't overstock it, a 10g does not hold many fish at all.

If u have no preferenace really nice planted would look great. you know whats nice for a 10g half beaks for top dwellers. awesome little fish. some shrimp for the bottom. maybe pygmy cories. otos. some middle fish and ur done :)

How hard is it to do a 10 gal saltwater?

Saltwater isn't too hard as long as you make sure that your parameters stay in check. I'm currently working on a four gallon nano reef and have found many examples of even smaller reefs that have worked out long-term, so small aquariums certainly can be used for saltwater.

A 10 gallon reef would be pretty cool, but you'd be better off starting with just a FOWLR (fish-only with live rock) just to get used to it.
