Well hmmm I'm pretty positive I misidentified my bass. When he was smaller he seemed to have the characteristics of a spotted but now he's really growing really fast and we're all pretty sure he's a normal LMB.

In fact, he had the rows of spots below his lateral stripe when we first got him, just like a spotted, but now most of them seem to have faded and he just has several random ones. His mouth also seems to have gotten bigger.

Do LMB often change pattern and shape a bit from juvenile to adult? I'm usually pretty good about identifying LMB and spotted bass, but whenever we caught juveniles fishing I never payed attention to them because if they weren't big enough to eat we released them. The only ones I really ever attempted to identify were over about 11 inches, and ours isn't even that long yet.

Here's a pic, just to make sure:

(Sorry about the size, I figured bigger would have more detail)

He's actually darker than in the pic, and he does have a few spots left, but I couldn't get a good pic since he never stops moving. Every time I go over to the tank he stares directly at me thinking I have food.
This afternoon when I went to put a magnet scraper in the tank to get the algae off the front and take pics he had my finger halfway in his mouth

If his side looks funny it's 'cause he has some scarring from an injury. I think before we caught him something had had him in their mouth before or attacked him 'cause they looked a lot worse at the time.

Yeah I figured.

Kind of weird how his pattern and stuff changed as he grew. Me and several other people that have caught spotted bass while fishing were POSITIVE at the time he was a spotted bass, and now we kind of feel like idiots because he's quite obviously a normal LMB.

I'm also kind of wondering about his growth rate because spotted bass don't get as big and LMB can get massive. He's grown quite a bit just in one month.

Oh well, either way he'll have a nice big tank that will suit him. It will just have to be a lot bigger apparently :D

We don't have spotted bass in our area, but it really looks a lot like mine.

There's not a huge difference lookswise.

Notice the black blotches above the lateral stripe, broken lateral stripe, small lines of spots on the stomach. A bit smaller mouth.

That's EXACTLY like this one looked when he was smaller, hence the misidentifcation. Now he does get the lines of spots on his stomach while feeding, but most of the time he just looks like in the pic I posted.

I think he was around 5 inches when we got him. He's now around 7 1/2 or 8.
I can't remember whether we got him may or june, but we haven't had him long. I think it was in may because for awhile I remember he didn't seem to grow at all and then within the last few weeks he's gotten quite a bit longer.
He's also a lot bigger around than he was originally, I don't think he was eating all that well where we got him.
There was a spot that had been flooded and then when the water receded several bass had gotten stuck in there, even some really big ones, so we kept the smallest. Much longer and the biggest ones probably would have eaten him anyway lol.
