So I'm finally ready to move give my 13" jag a companion, but he loves to kill stuff just for fun. I'm curious if he has hope to get a buddy. He's a loner in a 180 now but still claims the whole thing.

Should I even get him a buddy? And if so, what?

My jags In with my aro but for me it was s case of what could i put with the jardini rather than the jag ,I've since added a large pacu they do scrap but nothing major why not try a female see if they pair up ? Or I've also got big cats in with mine , irwini , Niger , giraffe , plecs , hope this helps :D

I might try a cat. I tried a female when he was between 7-8 inches. The female was 7" and he didn't hesitate to attack. Right after I put her in he did the normal flaring, but I had to go to the hospital a few minutes after and when I got back he had killed her.

You may have to do this over time and make changes. Is there decor in the tank? If so remove all the places or anything that can be claimed as territory. Then get a divider. Try them with a divider and no decor for some time. get them used to seeing each other. Then after a couple weeks of the divider you could try it without.. May work may not. Wont know til you try. Your also going to probably need a fish his size or larger.

+1 I took all the territory out of my s/c American tank just few bogwiod branches in middle sticking up and the aggrestion dropped dramatically, no territory , no need to defend , less aggrestion (never none lol)
You'll have to try other cichlids if your not satisfied with just cats and see what works every fish is different , my girlfreind had a jag in with a flowerhorn and parrots untill it got to 12" lived together for few years ( I never seem to be that lucky and end up with all the evil fish lol )

im growing out some babies from liveaquaria right now and i think if im going to put something in then now is the time to do it while their small... right now i have just a common pleco in there with them but i was thinking of doing a raphael cat or something

I don't think he is killing just for fun, he has simply claimed the whole bottom of the tank.

I agree with putting in a divider and changing territories around. Dumping fish in will surely cause the male jag to kill them, after all you are dumping a disoriented fish into already claimed territory.

I think the only "Companion" a male Jag would appreciate is a girlfriend.

now if its another fish for YOU to enjoy..lol.. then maybe try a cat that can hold its own like a Featherfin or something.

I've just found a small female to pair up with my big male (or at least try second go at it ) ill have to grow her up bit first she's only 3/4" only prob is my grow out tank aggressive aswell small cichlids lots of attitude , if she survives that sure she'll be fine , M8 you prob won't see much of a Raphael cat they hide a lot I never see mine , try find something that comes out more , Niger , giraffe there a lot more money than raphs but worth it :D
