What do you keep with your Geos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have my Bahia Red in with an oscar, sev, ornate bichir, clown loaches, plecos, and a flagtail.
I also have some Gymno. labiatus and Geo. abalios (which I'm about to split up so I can cool down the Gymnos and start conditioning them for future breeding) which are currently with tetras, a flagtail, and a uaru. I also plan on adding some cories and maybe something else once the abalios are in their own tank

the options are pretty great. Depends on the size of the tank, species of Geo, temp, etc...

with most Geos, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish will work. you do not want to mix them with any bruisers. Many people mix with other SA cichlids like severums.

Currently my tanks are as follows:

Geophagus
sp. "Araguaia Orange Head"
Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis
"Lemon Tetra"
Otocinclus hoppei
Nannostomus beckfordi
"Golden Pencilfish"
Corydoras julii

Satanoperca leucosticta
Corydoras melanistius
Hyphessobrycon rosaceus
"Rosy Tetra"
Hemigrammus erythrozonus "Glowlight Tetra"

Have kept Eartheaters with the following Cichlids successfully in the past.

- Heros efasciatus "Severum"
- Hypselecara temporalis "Chocolate Cichlid"
- Cleithracara maronii "Keyhole Cichlid"
- Apistogramma sp. (nb: Provide plenty of cover and try to keep them with the smaller Eartheater species as females can be quite timid and are easily outcompeted for food and stressed)
- Pterophyllum scalare "Angelfish"
- Laetacara sp.
- Mikrogeophagus sp.

It ultimately depends what species of Eartheater we're talking about. 'G'. brasiliensis and A. heckelii for example should not be kept with any Tetra or smaller community species as they're naturally predatory and although it might depend on individual fish, I would anticipate anything that will fit into their mouths will eventually disappear.

heros and acaras are some of my preferred tankmates for geos (in general), but depending on the species the list can be longer and/or different

Currently S. jurupari with severums, a pinktail chalceus, festivums, a jack dempsey, an african knife and a senegal bichir. I like the festivums and chalceus because they spend more time at the surface while the juruparis hang out near the bottom, my tank is 30" tall so I'm getting activity all over.
