what do you recommend

so i got my new media for my 2 externals.
i have 2ltrs of eheim substrat pro and 1 ltr of ceramic tubes and about 7ltrs of km-1 (small plastic self cleaning pond media) and loads of various grade sponges.
where do you think i should add the different media for maximum filtration effect.

external 1 has 2 trays so i need to fill both with one tray holding some sponge
bottom tray -
top tray -

external 2 has 3 trays and also want to have some sponge
bottom tray -
middle tray -
top tray -

please add your recommendations for each tray just copy and paste the sections above.

external 1 has been done

bottom tray - ceramic tubes/substrat pro with sponge on top.
top tray - ceramic tubes/km-1 with floss on top.

the ceramic tubes and sponge both were in the filter so i did not clean them, the filter should be ok and upto full strength and more in a few days.

this is what i am thinking for external 2 the 3 tier filter

bottom tray - km-1 with sponge
middle tray - km-1 with lesser coarse sponge
top tray - substrate pro with floss

what do you all think

I do not think highly of "self-cleaning" media, since that defeats the purpose: I want my filter to filter the water, not to release trapped particles ...

In general, the media should be (in the direction of flow):

1) ceramics (Ehfimech)
2) bio (Ehfisubstrat)
(if applicable 3) bio (ehfisubstrat))

You can line the top of the first tray with some sponge material or fiber (Ehfifix) and the top of the top tray with some fine fiber (Ehfisynth)

the km-1 stuff wont self clean in my filter its only really does it with movement and its packed tight in there.


so i will be going with tis for the other filter
bottom tray - km-1 with sponge
middle tray - km-1 with lesser coarse sponge
top tray - substrate pro with floss
