I want to keep plants in my sump tank to reduce my nitrates of my stingray tank. Everytime I have kept plants I haven't had any luck with them. I kinda guess it was because of the floursent lights I was using wasn't enough.

OK now I will be using a coralife 48" compact floursent light strip and a 85 gallon tank. I just called some LFS in my area and they have alot of hornwort, java fern, anarubis(I don't think I spelled that right).

I do alot a big water changes in my sump so I will probaly need some hardy plants.

I am also open to potting some plants in the sump too. Thanks for any help!!!!!!

Here's a pic of my setup!!!!

Hygrophilia Polysperma, when I tried and failed to start a planted discus tank this was one of the plants in it. Everything else died off when I stopped adding ferts etc. This plant is still going strong now. Everywater change we take out hand fulls of the stuff and it just grows back and the tank is now stocked with 2 oscars. Granted it's got a flourite substrate but that's it. No ferts, no C02 and it seems to thrive on fish waste

You want something that takes nutrients in from the water column instead of from substrate. Plants that don't normally root in substrate are guaranteed to do this: hornwort, duckweed, azolla, salvinia, frogbit, water lettuce, water hyacinth, riccia, etc.

When the tank gets stuffed with plants take most of them out so growth doesn't slow down; plants that aren't growing aren't effective nutrient sponges. You can probably get credit for them from an LFS or pond store; otherwise give 'em to somebody with hungry goldfish, koi, pacu, etc.

I just ordered a bunch of water hyacinths. What do you think about that and could anybody give me some tips about keeping alive?
i used to have some of these in my koi pond. i assume they need good light levels. also, dont let them float around. keep them in a tight group. if they float around own their own, they dont do so well. if conditions are right, this will spread like a WEED!!!!!

OK I got my Water hyacinths in I really don't like them so I threw them out. First reason I didn't like them was that I ordered way too many. I got 50 of them for 20 bucks. 2nd reason was the ugly roots that are very messy. I didn't want to get my pumps all clogged up so I decided to take them all out. I think I will go with hornwort or duckweed.
