the red cats seem to be popular but it depends wether you want other fish and what kinds red cats get big do you want the cat to define the tank

Are you talking about the red tail catfish? If you are then that will outgrow that tank in no time.

I would recommend an achara catfish or a vulture catfish is cool if you can find 1, there are a lot of options so it would really help if you knew what type of catfish you like e.g. Predatory, omnivore, long barbels, feathery fins? There are so many :)

Redtails, Acharas, and Vultures all will eventually need a much larger thank than a 135G (probably a 135G standard 72x18x25).
For a community type catfish, you can go with the Pictus family, Synodontis, Corydoras, etc.
Or maybe Gulper cats, Chaca Chaca's, smaller Doradidae, sun cats, etc.
There are so many to choose from, just depends on your setup, tank mates, and preference.

and what else you plan on stocking.

For the size if your goin just cats try a pack of hungry gulper cats.

It's an American Cichlid tank, and just an addition to it, nothing overly large I was thinking a Lima but wasn't sure if it would outgrow the tank. The internet says a 135 is fine but I would rather hear somebody's experience instead.
