The South
I'm considering building a saltwater tank in the 75-100 gallon range. The tank will contain fish and crustaceans, and eelgrass if I can get it to grow. I want the display to be sandy with no rock at all. I have been reading up on turf algae scrubbers and would like to incorporate one into the filtration. I would also like to include a liverock-filled refugium, as backup filtration and a source of microcrustaceans.

Here is my initial scheme:

Do you see any obvious problems? I know it is more usual to have filtration beneath the display, but I don't see what it would hurt to have it above the display.

I like the design but I would move the turf scrubber under the tank and have it returned via pump and not have it above. But would keep Fuge above and have it flow down the way you have it. Nice design by the way.

for the fact that the lighting doesn't constantly hit your fuge and the fact it easier to access and pull the scrubber out from underneath to clean then constantly getting on a ladder or stool to access it since some cleaning need's done on turf scrubber's.

Looks like it should work. Just a little twist on a standard design.

Thanks, Pharaoh! Thanks again, Mr. Reef, that all makes sense!

It will be a few months before I can start working on this, but I will be sure to post a build thread when the time comes. This will be my first foray into saltwater.

well its a good idea. but if you ever morays ( you probly will, i did :) ) it may be a little harder to make an impenetratable hood.
