I was thinking of making a sump with this design below. (Credit to honda237 for the pic).

I was about to make a sump with glass baffles, but the design below seems like it would work just as well and I could pack the sump with much more media. I was planning on buying 2 big buckets (8 liters) of matrix and putting it in a 60g sump for a 210g tank.

What do you think? Will a sump like this be just as good as one with baffles and scrubbies?

By looks it is just a pile of media dropped into a tank with a pump at one end.
The water needs to be able to fully flow through the media from one end to the other and not over the media, either full height sponge with the BB inbetween or better still baffles so the water can flow up and down from section to section. I would fit atleast 2 baffles, best with 3 for more media choice and heater/pumpm chamber.

Like Wayne suggests, most of the water will flow via the path of least resistance, right over top of the media. The idea of baffles is that it forces the water to flow up and down through the compartments and hence the media.

The more flow you can get over the actual media, the better the filter works.

As said above you need baffles. Maybe just go with a wet/dry, less baffles. But not by much. But hell you got all that media mind as well put it to use.
