What do you think of this sump?

This sump will be beside my tank.
Its approximately 180g filled to the top, but will be filled to around half way, so 90g (maybe more 100-130g ish) of actual water volume.

Theres a large space for biofiltration (~44g) and a large space for plants (hopefully a veggie filter)
I'd like to know if anyone has done anything similar to the veggie filtration and how it went.

The sump will be made out of 2X4s and plywood, waterproofed with fiberglass.

I'm open to suggestions and let me know if you tink anything will screw up.

I would go for Iris pseudacorus (see below) or anything that uses great amounts of nitraat, they make huge roots and take up huge amounts of posion (fish pee and poo).

If you have the room to house a square meter of these, you will lose a lot of bad chemicals! I use them I my 10.000 liter pond. Just guide you water through the water where the roots are in, relatively slow (so you should best make it a long narrow bucket or something like a cement bucket (below))

You can also cut off the flowers, in may/june for your wife, she will like it!

I know a couple of people that used veggie filters after astablished they work great the pain is keeping up with the plants ie. trimming , taking off dead leaves

I think its a nice idea.. Might do something similar myself.. Are you going to do anything for mechanical filtration.. and are those pseudo whatever plants (idont feel like going back and getting exact name..) readily available ? and actually while were talking filtration.. Do bio balls or other surface area items to grow bacteria have to be in a stream of water or if submerged totally do you get the same affect.. Ex if i just through 30 bio balls into a 240 gallon tank floating around would they be beneficial.. (not going to do it just asking to know)

Good Luck with the sump

the problem probably lies on the layout for the pump...water gets sucked back into the tank before going through the veggie filter...

Secondly an anchored plants would probably need soil as base whereas floating plants we have to look out for them getting sucked into the pump IF we place the pump as the last compartment within the sump

I have a veggie filter on my 420g plumbed system.. give me a minute, I will draw you up the concept that I use..

Here ya go! This is how you do it in freshwater.. You want your sump to Oxygenate the water as much as possible for beneficial bacteria growth, and before it re-enters the tank. If you build a raised system above the sump with a natural overflow, you can slow the water down, as well as inject cO2. In a normal freshwater sump, you will likely just grow algae with intense lighting, due to the low levels of cO2.

I have this on a 420g system and I have never had an ammonia spike, no matter how many fish I might overload it with.. The hornwart grows like crazy, and I harvest it all the time.. the Swords do lovely in the shade..

Let me know if you have questions!
