I was bored yesterday and had a bunch of bio material laying around, so thought I'd make use of it and install it somehow in the overflow camber in the tank. This is what I came up with:

So I having a look at it today and thinking; is chrome steel safe in there? The chromed steel rack is designed for bathroom stuff in the shower, I modified it to fit as shown, I think it's in my interest to build the rack out of plastic now that I look at it. What do you guy's think?

Thanks,

No it definently wouldnt hurt to make or buy a plastic rack. In time the chrome will start to flake off and expose metal which will rust of couse. In the meantime, that rack will be alright.

I would make it out of plastic if I were you. Great use of wasted space!

good idea i would also go with it made out of plastic i filled mine with eheims bio material

I picked up plactic trays today which will be much better and safer. I looked at the metal today, and :screwy: I don't know what I was thinking at the time. I'm gonig to build it biggar too, 2-3 more levels:) .

I think I saw something like that once, but it was a little larger and in a N. Reactor :D

The chrome served its purpose, but may have caused problems laster on...no doubt the plating had been compromised on corrosion would have set in exposing the nickel plating and it would go down hill after that.

But I have had large object completely rust out with no ill effects to the fish, you just can never be too sure.

Make sure we get pix of the 'new & improved' unit and chemistry spec's too.

Good work,

The stuff from the fish farm that I bought had a bunch of sponge filters with big steel nuts on them for weights. They were well rusted too. The depth of the rust indicated that they were in use for a number of years. It tells me that there is less to fear from rust than what we are giving it. It stains stuff like crazy though.

Thanks for the comments, I finished changing the rack to plastic, by customising of bunch of stackable plastic shoe boxes. I'm only running about 25% of total water flow throught the bio media and I also added a poly pre-filter, this makes for a nice drip rate.I want to get some of the bio house that is used in Bakki Shower systems in a few more trays, when it's used in a drip system it denitrates aswell:) . I used to get alot of water noise from the overflow and now it's very quiet, I'm very happy with the new addition.
