When recycling a tank with a big bioload{cant help it,lost power and all beneficial bacteria}will using Prime minimize or beat the damaging ammonia and nitrite? If i had it everyday.I have temp back up,cleaned the canister filters and gravel, added all my fish and two bottles of Cycle and 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons.Just a waiting game now. When i get home from work tommorow i plan on doing a large water change and probaly everday after that.

I'm not sure how the chemical composition compares, or the price in your area, but I've used API's Ammo-Lock when I screwed up a cycle. I had a filter break once with a fully stocked tank. I kept up the water changes, but also added a dose of Ammo-Lock every day, or every other day. A new cycle took place really quick. I doubt you killed ALL of your beneficial bacteria, so it should grow back fairly quickly if you have a decent filter. The Prime or Ammo-Lock should help keep the fish alive.

Anyway, I know here, I got a bottle of Ammo-Lock in the pond section of a local LFS that was twice the size of a bottle of Prime for about the same price as the Prime. Personally, I'd just go with that, were I you.

And remember- Ammo-Lock doesn't change the ammonia readings. It just bonds something with the ammonia so it doesn't harm your fish. Your tests will still show ammonia in the water.

I've never used ammo-lock so I couldn't give you an opinion there. However, I use Prime for nearly everything. Prime should help with nitrites. I've cycled a couple of tanks with assistance from Prime and had very few fishy deaths.

How long do you think i should wait to feed?

how long was your power out that all the beneficial bacteria died?
Tank had been down 35 hours with the temperature getting in the 40's.

Ouch!

Yep everything was gone.

Go with your treatment and keep monitoring the water quality.

Oh ya, crossing your fingers when your not using them may help too.

Keep us posted,

So do you think i should wait a week to feed and let the ammonia and waste the fish produce ease in to it or should i feed sparingly so theres more food for the bacteria?

Second part, even with using the Prime theres still ammonia to cycle but its just less harmfull to fish right?

Sorry for the bump again im just really worried and there really hungry lol.I have another question also.I dont want to do too much to fast. With all the stress im worried about ich, should i add more salt and raise the temp even though i havent seen any signs yet? Also there really beaten up from all the moving and fighting i guess,is it safe to add Melafix now or should i wait? Thanks again for the help,im just worrrying bad and want to do the best thing to keep them around and healthy.Oh and i just got home from work and they look great and are starving to death so its looking good so far but i know its going to be a battle.I also put some Stability in there when i got home.Ill check the water params shortly and post back.
