I want to get a Red Parrot Cichlid. I know that there hybrids and all and some people dont like them but the way i think of them is that even though humans made kind of a frankenstine creature, they all still need a good home. So anyways I have a black convict and a firemouth cichlid and am wondering how they would mix. I did some research on them and read that they are aggressive but there mouths are so deformed that they can nip or even swim as fast as the others, poor things. so what does everyone think of this idea?

should be just fine. might be some missing fins, but they will heal. i bet your convict will run the tank when the water settles out

I agree. The Con will probably rule but without a mate he shouldn't be too much trouble. What size tank?

Its a thirty gallon, I read that a red parrot will grow only to about five inches in a thirty gallon or less so i thought that would work out perfect. So i shouldnt ever get another convict if i want peace in the tank? Good thing you said that, i was thinking about getting another lol Not any more. The firemouth is definataly pretty bossy right now over the convict, the firemouth is also bigger right now so Im assuming thats why

well in this case since its a 30 gallon i wouldnt get a bp aka blood parrot ( the fish you were talkin about ) they can and will reach up to 8 to 10 inches ( never seen a bp max out at 5 inches in my whole 10 years of fish keeping ) my mom bp before i gave it to the nursing home ( later to find out the catfish i gave them to klled the bp ) was around 7 inches if not 8 inches so try something smaller for the 30 gallon or get a 55 ( min size tank for 1 bp with tankmates ) get a HRP ( cousin of convicts and some even say they are convicts but just diff lake versions of them or whatever ) but make sure its the same sex as the other fish you have.

just my oppinion

Personally I think a 30 is too tight for your stock. I know that a lot of people like keeping their Cons in 10s and 20s but I never liked that practice especially when keeping three cichlids of their potential size. I have seen many 6" BPs and Firemouths. Most of the Cons that I have kept and seen usually don't get more than 5" but I have had a few in the past that reached 6" before I sold them. If I were you I would prepare to get a larger tank at least a 55. You can get more than one Con as long as they are the same sex. A pair will readily breed and defend their fry viciously. In such a small space your Firemouth and BP will be constantly harrassed.

That is totally untrue, If a BP maxs out at 5" from being in small tank it's because it's been stunted from being kept in a small tank. which is cruel and unhealthy. Most stunted fish have health issues and die a lot younger than healthy fish.

Plus don't ever believe the myth that a fish will only grow to size of the tank. A fish that can grow to 8" will most likely grow to 8" regardless of how small of a tank you keep it in. Unless of course it gets stunted.

I agree . . . the OP has been given bad information . . . don't try to keep a BP in a 30G tank, and don't overstock your 30G tank to begin with . . . a convict and a firemouth are already sufficient stock

in the long-run, you will have a healthier tank and happier fish

Ya know i think im just going to try and find a smaller cichlid. I dont want to stunt any fish or anything. Im going to go looking around at the pet store tomorow and see if i cant find something that doesnt get so big. Im glad you all helped, i was pretty mislead by what I read on a different site.

first we need to know the size of your other tank. whats the dimitions (sp) of it to?

and jellybean cons are short bodied pink convicts ( some black con but rarly ) and most are dyed but few very lucky ones arent. they i think max out at 3 MAYBE 4 inches for males at most ( again i think, so dont quete me on it ) but your 30 gallon is maxxed out already. get some giant danios to help with the cichid aggression.
