A friend of mine wants to trade a 10" NTT for this 18" gar.

Wondered what you guys thought about the trade and the specimen - can't quite make up my mind

I have a 84"x24"x24"

Tank mates would be peacock bass (those in my avatar)

Do you think they would be too aggressive for the gar?

Glad you think i am getting the better part of the deal :) i did think that NTT were of higher value.

I wouldn't put it in with the peacock bass; gars generally don't fare well with them because of aggression issues. I had a slightly larger Florida gar a few months back that looked like it had been put through a grinder; the previous owner had housed it with some very aggressive peacock bass.

As a juvenile, an NTT is definitely worth more, but it takes a little bit of time to get a Florida gar to that size which is why I think it's a good deal. From my understanding, prices vary on both fishes based on where you are, but, on average, they should be about the same as far as cash value goes.

I thought they may be a little active for a gar but i have really wanted one of late.

I am told that gar import to the UK is going to be stopped soon so guess that would increase the value of the gar but still not sure.

I don't keep the NTT with my fish and rarely see him so its sort of a free trade for me in a way if i were to do it but i don't want to get the fish for any harm to come to it, i did have a friend who once kept a gar and cichla who did fine but i suppose its different in each case - here is a video...

I'd say that your friend got lucky with that combo. You could probably put the gar in the aquarium that the datnoid was in, though, depending on the dimensions.
