As of right now my 55 gallon has pool filter sand as a substrate. It's home to a large mouth bass and a pumpkinseed sunfish. I do have two plants that I managed to revive from my Oscar tank, I believe it's and Amazon sword and a Java fern but who knows. Anyway, I'm think about sucking out the sand and leaving it bare bottom. The only reason I'm suggesting this is because after a week or so of adding the bass I noticed that the amount of poo has reached an all time high. It just seems to me that it would be loads better to maintain water quality, than to try and replicate a "natural environment" for my fish. So I'm curious to see what everyone's opinion is about a bare bottom native tank.

why go to the work of removing the sand because of the LMB when he'll be too big for the tank in a few months? just run your future 400 gallon with a bare bottom.

Haha my future 400 gallon... I wish I wish. The bass is just growing till my neighbor is pleased with the size of him, and it's going in his pond. And it wouldn't be too hard to remove all the sand. Over 4 weeks I'd remove it all while I do my weekly water changes.
