mars
I bought one today and its very small, maybe 3 inches. It looks like a darker senegal bichir, maybe a little greener, a few tiny spots.

It was $12 but it doesn't look marbled like the pics I have seen. Is this normal? Did I get shafted? I don;t have any pics yet, the lights are off, its in a 10 gallon with some mosquito fish because I think its not big enough to go with my senegals growing out in the 29.

If anyone has some pics of the various palmas at young stages I woudl be really happy if you could post some, and then I could compare.

all three palmas subspecies have patterns. if yours has no pattern, then its likely a senegal. senegalus are sometimes mislabeled as 'palmas' at lfs.

well looks like I just payed $14 for a senegal!

Maybe its just stressed but it just looks really different than my senegals. Oh well, it doesn;t have any patterning. Maybe I can return it, or exchange it for a different fish. It just sucks.

I feel pretty crappy right about now.

I think I am just going to try to go to bed.

Is that a keyhole ewurm? I wish I could find some of those, I have a male bolivian ram in my 29 with my senegal growouts, and he owns the substrate, gently pushes the bichirs away from his little rocky area. Well thanks for the input though guys. Cool avatar infblue, I made a bender in my highschool ceramics class. We drew topics out of a hat and I got 3000 AD so i did bender since futurama takes place in the year 3000.

Well thanks again.

stupid lfs's

small sengs tend to have a bit of a pattern, a few spots around the head

I only bought it because I remembered the palmas stay smaller too, and thats the only other one I have seen besides the senegal, and it looked a little different. Turns out its just darker than my others with little dots going all down its back.

I wish I had these LFS's that actually stock different fish. Its like Oscar, angelfish, african cichlids, maybe some jack dempseys, everywhere. If its an original fish then someone traded it in.

I guess I will just have to wait for some one to trade in a poly, but that will probably never happen.

Its possible you have a stressed or washed out palmas... I would wait a couple weeks and get some pics up here. They do tend to look like the pics wurm put up.

No this was definitely a senegal and I know why I couldn't tell in teh store. They had them on black gravel, and I had white, thats why they looked so much different than mine. Plus it was the baby senegal pattern with the stripes that go down their back. I called them and talked to one of the guys that used to work at petsmart with the managers I worked for and he told me to just bring it up and get a refund.

I was very thankful. I wanted a poly palmas though. I told him if they got any more clown loaches in for 3.79 to hold a few. They don't have a high survival rate there but its probably because they don;t have any hiding places in their tanks.

Anyway I am glad this was resolved and I didn't pay 2.5 times as much for a senegal.

Thanks MFK.

good job
