So carbon/charcoal takes out Ammonia/nitrates/nirites?
an some say they take out impurities what are the impurities that it takes out.
can some one just clarify what it does an if you use it an thoughts on it.
Thx

Carbon is used more to polish your water, and keep it looking clear.

As stated it does not really remove ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate, but it does remove some of the sources of these chemicals from your water. Namely, it removes dissolved organics by adsorption (like being absorbed, but they just stick to the surface). It will also remove medications and tanins, meaning tanic acids leeched from any driftwood. Either way, the visible result of adding carbon is crystal clear water. However, for cichlids, tangs, and saltwater angelfish its continuous use is accused of removing necessary vitamins and causing Lateral Line Disease (LLD) aka Hole in the Head Disease (HITH).

I recommend only using it from time to time

keep in mind that there is no conclusive proof of this. it has been suggested, but never verified.

many cichlid keepers have tried no carbon tanks in an effort to stop HLLE disease in subseptible fish like geophagus, oscars etc but to no avail..
