What does everyone run in their HOB filters??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
On my highly stocked 75 I run two AC110s and a magnum HOT hang on canister. The AC110s just have the foam block and a big bag of eheim substrat pro in them, as well as pothos growing out the top. The magnum hot has some purigen and micron filter cartridge. The tank is also heavily planted

Thanks for the response! I think when funds allow I'm going to add an FX-5, and just use my hang-ons for Bio-filtration. But first on the priority list is to replace the 2 Stealth heaters I have in the tank... but that will be another thread LOL.

I run 2 emperor 400's on my 75.. and have to admit 4 of the 5 fish in the tank are 14"+ 3 gar and 2 spiney eels, lots of pellets going into the tank and worms, and feeder fish.

So I am runnig a very high bio-load ( WC's done 2x or more per week.. My nitrates obviously build but I never have issues w/ ammonia or nitrites) I also run in the second insert compartment extra bio ( iir from AC) and rarely change the xpensive carbon/floss inserts. ( maybe every 3-4 monthes?) You can get 2 of these filters for around 100$ via amazon w/ free shipping ect.. atm I'm running 4 emps spread out on high bio-tanks and have never had an issue with them (Imo they outperform any comparable canister on the market)

I'm not farmilular with the filter your useing enough to say yay or nae... it's all in the water tests imo. if it ain't broke don't fix it. If your looking at heaters I am liking the aqueon pro's.. I've switched out all my odl stealths for these over the last 6 monthes..

Those Stealth heaters went on recall months ago, you can take them into Petsmart and trade them out.

Since you have a reusable frame for your filter drop ins, you can build them however you want. I would put in a large particle filter pad and then a finishing pad afterwards. I don't usually run carbon in the tanks. If you have a mesh you could add Purigen to one filter in a mesh.

If you have the room I would consider a 20ppm sponge as the last thing the water flows through, not for filtering, but to get a good pad of BB growing so you don't lose it all when changing the filter drop ins.
