What Does My JD Adrian Have

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Add dissolved salt at 1 teaspoon per gallon, and stop using Melafix. Just in case, I would get Seachem Kanaplex if you can get locally or API Fungus Cure or Jungle Labs Fungus Clear (WalMart). Keep those in hand just in case it gets worse within 24 hours. I would make sure temperature is around 75F.

Hello. Is it some kind of fungus infection? Is it contagious? My other JD in the tank is fine.

I added the salt and ordered API Fugus Cure from Amazon and it will be here tomorrow. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Agree with Rocksor, salt is my go to cure all, I usually add 3 lbs of rock salt per 100 gallons, for wounds like the photo, and average maladies. I add it all at once to get a salinity up to 3.5 ppt quickly. That's enough salinity to be too much for many fresh bacteria, fungus and parasites to reproduce, but not enough to harm a cichlid (unless of course its a very soft water delicate species) which a JD is not.

I have her in a 12 gallon tank. It has a filter, heater & air stone. She has plenty of room. How long do I do this for? Since Rocky is OK, do you think I should treat the big tank? Thank you for your help. I appreciate it!!!

Just looks like a simple injury on her so far, so if the male has no symptoms no need to treat his tank.
I'd only treat in the Q tank until she looks normal.
For 12 gallons only 1/2 lb of salt.
But you may find she can only be put back in the main tank, if she's ready to spawn, or he may batter her again.
Or if you divide the main tank with egg crate (light diffuser) , until you see her cleaning a surface in preparation for spawning, then it may be possible to take the divider out.
This is one of the reasons many people keep cichlids in harem situations, so one female doesn't take the brunt of his intentions. Trying to keep males with females can be problematic unless they are totally bonded, even then, things can go south in a blink.

Once she is better IM taking her back to the LFS. I just got her thinking she would be good company for him. I made a mistake. He can live by himself in the tank. I do appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Great comment. Would like to see a post sometime om harems. Essentially what AZ Gardens recommended when I reached out to them regarding oscars. Only caveat is need the tank size for the harem.
