When ppl are talking about grow out tank pr grow him out. What do they mean? Dont hate me but i see this termed used around here alot. But does this mean put a fish in a tank by itself do alot of water changes Thus releasing its jell or whatever cimical u call it that tells it how much room it has to grow. I did i just make that up? I dont think i did cuz its used in the koi world.

it means a tank that is too small for the adult size of your fish, that is used to grow them to a size where your other fish won't think of them as a snack.

does that make sense? i worded it kind of wierd.

the term growing out, is usally said, when a person has a fish in a tank that is smaller than the minimum tank size for an adult of that speices, and when that fish is larger, they will put it in a sutabile tank for it's adult size, though with some iresponsible<sp) hobbists this can be an excuse to keep, what fish they think are cool monsters in there 10 gallon tank, though usally people are legit.

Ya I'm doing the grow out saga, actually it's my evil plan so my wfe will let me buy more tanks.

My Silver aro has been in the following 55g until 7-8" move to a 75g until 14" and I just moved him to a 120g where he will say until summer. Plans are in the works for a 300g that will go in my office. Although I did just get a 150g long tank that was advertised as a 240g. I new it wasn't but I bought the tank anyway. It's 96" x 18" x 21", I don't think my aro will go into it though since depth is 18" which is the same as the 120g.

Pretty much the same thing but...You want to grow a small monster out to give them a chance before placing them directly with the larger monsters. A smaller "grow-out" tank is also easier to target a single fish or group of fish and nurture it to a healthier status than typically noted when first bought from an LFS.

For example: I bought 6 1-2" peacock bass for 6 bucks a pop. They will eventually go in a 240 gallon, but for now they will stay in a 30 gallon so I can beter concetrate on target feeding them or treating for future issues. That 240 currently houses a large clown knife. That clown knife would eat eeryone of them in one sitting! Also, I bought 6 even though I really only plan to keep 3-4 in the long run but I will select the strongest ones as time goes on.

Hope this helps. A question is only stupid when an answer is not sought for it.

Yes it does, thank u very much. But do u need more water changes on this tank then u would on the norm one?

not necissraly... you have a large species in there but they are still young. but they are growingand in a smaller tank chems build up faster. so likely, YES
