Fall River Ma.
i haven't been on here in a while but i now need some advice on an up coming purchase. I want a few EBJD.... my issue is how do i choose ones that are going to be the bluest? I know they come with very different amounts of blue as adults. Any advice?
Also what is the best size fry to buy to insure survival?
Thanks ladies n' gents

The bigger you can get them the better chance you will have of survival they are pretty susceptible to disease when they are young.
As far as I know I think that their colour and pattern can change as they get older...I don't think there is any real way to determine the final out come of your fish.

yeah im not sure of a way to tell which is bluest as adult i guess pick ones out that have the most light blue now and have the least amount of spacing between blue but even this is not guarantee, main thing to look for is that their face slants normally so you dont get one that is beak faced and as alyssa said the larger you can get them the better, make sure you have a quarantine tank set up for them as you more than likely you will need to treat them for internal parasites, so go ahead and get some jungle parasite clear unless you are getting them from a home breeder that takes good care of the fish. the sooner you get them treated for parasites the better the chances of their survival GOOD LUCK :)

I agree with sarah about the internal parasites I have lost a ebjd from them...but the one I have left is doing great!

Once you have the EBJD's home, don't introduce any more additional new fish than necessary untill the dempseys are over 4 inches. This will lower the odds of exposing the dempseys to illness and increase their chances for survival.

i am buying from LFS and dont have any clue about parents. i know many of them seem to be shorter than the average JD... Also little to none have the "break face" some do have a hump on there head even at 1" is this normal?
i heard a rumor that these fish wont breed at all...is this true?
has anyone bred them?

Are you sure they are EBJD's? EBJD's dont have a hump on their head. IF they really do at 1inch, then that is very awesome! I assume they might even be the silk flowerhorns. But if they really do have a nuchal hump at 1 inch, man...i bet there would be tons of people wanting some EBJD's with nuchal humps. especially the Fh breeders.

Breeding EBJD x EBJD wont yield anything as of yet. But breeding EBJD x reg jd will give you 100% BG's. Then BG x BG will give you 25% EBJD again.

Pick the fatest adn thick, most curious, bright blue one. Dont pick any yellow or black ones. At this age, you might not see the beak face yet, but not all beak faces look bad. Its a personal opinion.

They are definatly EB- JD... adn they def have a slight but noticable hump....i bought 2 today and put them in with my flowerhorn fry that are still small....i dont mind loosing a few of them aslong as the EB-JD's are safe.... i will post pics at some point.... i chose the one with the most blue as well as the most aggressive.... im hoping for the best!:headbang2
