Right now its in a ten gallon holding tank im sealing up a 125 gallon that will be its home i bought it knowing it to be a alligator gar

that is a Florida gar, but that mean you can keep it with some other fish after it reach 8-10''. Bichir are probably the best tank mate to keep with a Florida gar. Other than that, any non aggressive fish could work. I've kept my gar with koi and gold fish before with no problem.
If you have an alligator gar instead, anything that you put in the tank with it will be kill.

I have put a chitala with my baby gar and they get along pretty well

that's a florida gar, and as stated, polypterus are great tank mates. My gar shared a tank with polys and loaches with zero issues.
