ok i'm no marine biologist, but what are some of the limiting factors when it comes to mixing species of cichlids? some one said they crossed a Jewel, wich is from africa, with a Green Terror or Saum from SA...the jewel is from the river and not a rift like fish like the frontosa. anyway what is the reasoning for some species being able to breed w/ several other species, and ones only able to breed w/ them members of their own genus like discus. just throwin it out there, if anyone if a genetic biologist feel free to chime in ahaha. also i would like to hear of all the differnt cross breed that you have either personally breed or seen knowing it's for real. PICS PICS PICS i'm really curious how far the rabbit hole really goes!!!!!!!!

yeah i was wondering the same thing but its probebly too coplicated ive heard of strange combos like Paroonxrtc hybrids, they look a little strange but those two fish are from totaly differnt continents aswell

thats odd, jewels can cross with terrors? Where you get that idea from? Just wondering

somebody is a lair. Africans and americans can NOT crossbreed. Don't know why, but I do know they can't.

normally its chromosome count or something else that inhibits it.

genetically, chromosome number in gametes (sperm/egg) should be the same i think to produce pairs of chromosomes in the fertilised zygote (fusion of egg and sperm). especially if hybrids will be fertile themselves.

but behavioru is very very important too. like breeding cues and responses too them.
e.g. a males dance should actually be enticing to females.

think about pH, temperature, water qualities etc that bring about breeding behaviour in each species, they should be very similar.

think also about after spawnin. a male that likes to guard the eggs and raise them will have a serious problm with a female who wants to mouthbrood. and fry have natural eesponses that may not fit well wih parents behaviours.
