What exactly does chemical filtration do?

basically can remove meds, like with carbon. some can remove ammonia, phosphates etc. I never use them, I rather use biomedia and water changes.
 
Read the sticky but cliff notes are that it polishes the water and helps reduce chemicals in the water. Nowadays there is more than just carbon there is bio chem zorb purigen.. The list goes on. I always run Carbon and purigen the tank water is completely invisible.
