Where the gators are
tomorrow im startin a plywood tank build. :headbang2its going to be roughly 330 gallons. ive been lookin at setting up an overflow to a sump, but thinking about just takeing the easy route and buying a canister filter. ive been looking at the Fluva A-218 FX5. Amazons got them for $235. is this worth it or is there another canister(s) that would work better? thanks.

Fx-5s are great but sumps are definitely the way to go. You get a larger amount of water in your system and can move a lot of water while also skimming the top layer. I have a pre-drilled 210 and the sump is amazing. I have very large fish in here and have had no problems with water chemistry. If you need more info on how you might do this write back.

Quick question. Where do you have your holes at the bottom, top or side of the the tank.

i dont have any drilled yet just started on the base. just tryin to figure out what i should do before i start the tank. so the holes can be anywhere i want.:D

I'm researching the same thing right now. Seems like a sump is the best choice. You can have a HUGE amount of mechanical and bio filtration with a sump. Plus the added amount of water in the system makes the whole system more stable. No reason not to do one if you are DIYing the thing anyway.

You'll need at least 3 FX5's if you are going to go that route. Much better to just build yourself a sump (can build it right into your stand).

100+ would be ideal. As a general rule 1/3 the tank size for the sump. Rubbermaid makes a 150 tub for a little over $100.
