i know everyone asks this question for their tank and ive searched the thread for info but id like some specific advice for my tank. plus we dont have anything bettr to do right? I currently have a penguin 330 or somthing like that ( i beleive it is the largest penguin, with the dual bio wheels) and it doesn't really seem to keep up with my tank load. so i am thinking of adding a fluval or a aquaclear or eheim....somethiing like that. so what specific filter do you guys suggest i add in addition to the penguin?

also some general filter questions...

is there such thing as to much filtration?

does more/better filtration mean less water changes?
i would think no since filters do not remove nitrates but perhaps better filtration means nitrates dont build up as fast. i know there is no way out of water changes.. i dont want to go there....just curious.

I love the aquaclears. You could add an ac110 for $39.99 on petsmart.com and they work great. Also, the emperor 400 is one of the best filters for the money.

ya i was considering those but i thought they seemed to similar to what i already have....i was thinking maybe a canister or something? i know thats really logical...i guess they all do the same thing. but it would be nice to have a canister that i could in the cabinent under the tank instead of hanging off teh back if thats the only difference.

I like any of the filters that hang on the back of the tank. I have a filter for a 60gallon tank on my 37gallon, and my water quality is just fine, but I only have 17 tetras in it. Just my two-cents.

If you want to go canister it depends on how much you want to spend. I personally prefer the eheim to all other filters, but HOB and canister. The Eheim pro 2 series is really good, so is there ecco line. The fluvals are cheap, but not to reliable. Filstars are pretty good. Catalina makes a canister nearly identical to the eheim pro 2 line, but they are really hard to find anymore.

PS I like your L200.

I will have to agree. emperor 400 with bio wheels is the best hob filter available. i raised an O and a jag in a 55 with dual 400's thats approx. 800GPH flow. two on a 55 will handle any bio-load you can throw at it. i used one as strictly mechanical filtration and the other as bio filtration. Now im just waiting for the 125 to cycle and these big guys will have a new home. i will probably ditch the cannisters on the 125 for the dual emperors after i put these guys in. they move an incredible amount of water

if you want hob go with the ac by hagen.more space for bio filtration by far.i have both ac and penguin not to sure about bioweels.ac all the way, canister i have x-p3 veary nice
easy to clean and gives you good filtration.but for a 55gal i would just go with your penguin and add a ac 110 you cant over filter in this case more is better.the way to help your nitrates and water changes is less fedding and water changes.the end product of filtration is nitrates..........

No there is no such thing as too much filtration. You could create too much current for some fish to do well. And no more filtration wont eliminate waterchanges, gotta get those nitrates and hormones and all out of the tank.
What do you mean not keeping up with tank load are you showing ammonia or nitrite?
If its big fish poop lying around another filter isnt going to help much.

Eheim canister filters are really good if you want to spend a little more money. Very quiet and reliable. I'm running a Eheim Professional II 2028 on my 85 gal.
