I know this has more than likely been asked before and I am not trying to start any fighting. I just want honest opinions. I am looking at filters for a 75 gallon salt water and one to put on my 100 gallon fresh water tank. Fresh water has a fahaka in it. salt water not sure what i will put there yet. I am currently looking at a Rena XP4, Ehiem 229 and the new FX 5 reviews good or bad and opinions I would love to hear. I do not want to run multiple filters if i can help it.

thank you

Personally I'd recommend staying away from a filter all together for the SW, and just get lots of LR and a good protein skimmer. As for the freshwater, I'd go with a Eheim 2260/2262. The XP4's have been found to have problems with their impellers, and, I have heard from a private source, they were a rushed product to compete with the Pro 3 and FX5. The FX5's have good reviews, but I'm still reserved about them, and prefer an eheim to any fluval. Personal preference will always be an issue. Eheim has proven quality, with a long standing review of good products. Fluval needs to still be proven for long term quality.

I used to have a mini reef. All I had was a protein skimmer, lots of light, and live rock. The live rock is the actual filter because it contains all the necessary beneficial bacterias. The protein skimmer takes excess protein and waste away. I'm also partial to eheims for freshwater. There's lots of threads about eheims vs. fluval so I would just do a search.

I've just put a XP3 w/ (2) AC500's on my 90 mbuna tank and I like it very much. Great improvement over the 350 magnum (p.o.s.) and (2) AC300's I run on my 55. Just my opinion. So far... let you know more in a year...
