Given the two tanks and fish how/where would you set up the below listed filters?

180 gallon (4 Silver Dollars, 1 Red Devil, 1 Trimac (female), 2 JD's, 1 Texas, 1 Rafael Cat

55 gallon (one GT)

2 x Rena XP3's
2 x AC 110's
1 x Hot Magnum (micron cartridge only)

as far as the filters go, if it were me, I would put

2-XP3's and 1 AC on the 180

and run the second AC on the 55. many of my fish friends run 55's with a single AC110 and do fine. its a fair size HOB for a tank that size IMO.

the 180 will need the bulk of the filration. as far as the fish goes,

the rapheal and the 4 SDs could go in the 55 (although it can be tight as they grow)

the other cichlids are mean enough and get big enough to require the 180..

I would go with a single AC110 on the 55g. The rest, put on the 180g except the Hot Magnum. You should just use the Hot Magnum as needed.

I know this has probably been asked 1,000 times, but what is the general rule of thumb for turnover rate for HOB and Cannister filters given a properly stocked tank.

Turnover Rate = GPH / Gallons

I know there are many variables, but let's assume an established tank with Aqua Clear HOB's and Rena Cannisters and no chemical filtration (charcoal).

I dont understand your last question? Do you mean whats the suggested turnover ? Or how much should you expect output of the filters to be ?

As far as recommended I personally shoot for a 6-10 times an hour turnover. That is just what works for me but I overfilter

As far as output I can tell you that a fluval 405 is rated at 340 GPHand puts out around 225GPH in my experience and studies.

5x tank volume per hour.

ex.
So on a 75 gal you want at least 375 GPH.

The caveat to this is, you also want "effective" flow. Meaning, no dead spots in your tank, otherwise you're just filtering the same water over and over, yet the debris remains.

I have heard 8- 10x for HOB filters

but less (4x per hour) for canisters- due to the volume of media.

but turnover rate is only one small peice of the puzzle. media volume, stocking level/bioload, etc have to be taken into account.

12 Volt, using logic, one would deduce that whoever told you that was insane.

How would a HOB be able to turn more than a canister? (unless the canister was terrible and the HOB was exceptional)
