As some people know, I'm selling Off most of my stock in order to breed jack dempseys in my 55 gallon tank. I will be adding pfs and driftwood to the tank. If the stock doesn't sell in a week I will be trading it to local fish stores. When my tank is set up, what can I stock it with other than the pair of jds? I was really thinking some sort of catfish/bottom dweller. What stocks could work? I need to know the possibilities in order to see what I could trade with at a lfs. No comments on the current tank or snapper please. Just looking for help with stocking and that's all.

Since they will be breeding you might want some sort of dither or schooling fish. I wouldnt get catfish seeing as though they will sneak in and eat the eggs or they will get killed by the pair. Ive found rainbows and giant danios to be good tanks mates.

Anything bigger? Really don't like tropicals. Thanks though.

If your goal is to breed these JDs Id just keep the JDs. If you want a pair of JDS and the fry to be eaten then any similar sized New world cichlid with similar temperament will be fine, although a breeding pair of JDs is probably enough for a 55. I'm not sure what "Really don't like tropicals." means unless you want some gold fish...

I don't like the little "tropical" fish not the tropical temperament fish. Everything I keep is "tropical". Saying I don't like anything like those little danios and mollies

Not much, but you can use a convict as a dither for the pair to beat up on so they don't get pissed at each other. You should probably have a tank ready for him when they finally lay eggs thou so he doesn't get harassed to death.
