What fish did I just buy? ID anyone?

Cant take/post a pic, but here is what I know.

I has markings just like a clown loach.
Similar body shape to a tiger barb.
It is currently 4.5 inches long. I was told it will reach 14 inches.
The LFS told me the name and I forgot.
They said it is very rare in aquaria because of the extreme dangers to people who try to get them from its native african area. (north africa??)

If I have some names I'd be able to image search google and confirm if this is my fish.

The LFS said they are not rare due to few numbers, but rare to find in stores because of difficulty to get them.

The LFS had a price tag of $125

I am their driftwood supplier, and just became their slate supplier.
I traded 115lbs of slate rock and a 7inch senagalus for him.

The slate cost me about $35

Think I got a decent deal or got ripped?
