what fish is a good fish for beginners also relatively cheap in the saltwater world. im looking for one thats very hardy. also do i need a heater or a chiller for a FOWLR tank. the temp of my unheated freshwater tank never reaches above 74 degrees.

74 is probably good enough, without heater. but depending how much lower than this (more than 1-2 degrees) you should have a heater..

some good fish:
grammas
chalk bass
gobies
blennies
dottybacks
clownfish
chromis
jawfish
cardinalfish

76 to 78 is ideal, no higher then 80 and no lower then 74. This will cause major stress in fish and coral and may ultimatly lead to there death.

i always had mine at 82-84 no problems. many of our saltwater fish come from climates and water that are much warmer than that. But think of your 74 as a very minimum. I would think that would put stress on the fish at that low. get to at least 78-80. just my experience though.

Your temperature should be 74 (lowest) to 82 (highest.) I would stay away from damsels as they become very aggressive and territorial. If you want to add fish later, the damsel may take exception and attack new fish.

You can start with a yellow tang if your tank is 55 gallons or bigger. False percula clownfish is also a good fish to start with. Many people do recommend damsels while you are cycling your tank, but if you are going that route, please remove them before adding your more valuable fish.

If you want a not so cheap but really hardy colorful and amazingly personal fish get a flame hawkfish. Its the only fish that I have that makes eye contact and he will come into my had and perch on it when I am cleaning the tank (they dont have swim bladders so the normaly perch). Oh the only downside is that there about $40

Edit: My tank is around 80. It never gets lower than 78 and durring the realy hot summer days it gets to 86 but is back to 80 in a couple hours. I suggest getting a heater and have it set to 77ish in the 80s the algea growth is much larger than in the 70s.

You can find clownfish for $15 or you can find a royal gramma for $10 or $15. In terms of saltwater, those prices are cheap.
