I saw a really good deal on a 60 gal. aquarium and just had to have it. Now my only problem is I don't know what to put in it. I want something more on the less common side. Something that wouldn't be compatible in my 37 reef or 125 planted aquariums. Some things that have caught my eye:

stingrays (tank probably not big enough, what do you think?)
gars
african cichlids
silver dollars
eels
trout
saber tusk barracuda (might just be a misleading lfs name)

what do you guys think would be coolest on my desk?

You could do a sweet african setup complete with rock stacked caves and argonite sand substrate, and it would work nicely with a 60. You could even go frontosa colony (slow growing) and maybe one day (after transferring to a bigger tank in the future) have a money-making breeding colony. Thats what I'd do.

yea i agree .......some fronts would be sweet in that tank..........but yea that tank is too small for rays and prolly gars in the long run cuz they get long and need a lot of room to turn.........welcome to MFK by the way........

I am not familiar with the aggresion level of the silver dollars. Is there any way that I could put a small school of siver dollars in there? Or would they be too docile? SOrry about posting this thread twice, I have no clue how it happened.

If you wanted to put them in with the africans that wouldnt work because the water chemistry they both live in is different but if you were just thinking about having a school of silver dollars by themselves that would work well because they are very docile

I want it to look like there is a lot of activity in the tank, so do you guys think africans or silver dollars? What else could I keep in the tank with africans? Would bichirs or any type of eels work out, or would they get beat up? Are there any catfish that could live with africans? How many cichlids could fit in a 60?

I would be very careful what you put in with Africans because they are very prone to nipping. Some species are more docile than others so I would decide which Africans you want first and then decide on tankmates. I agree the Africans are the best bet for that tank size

I like the auratus and yellow labidochromus (sp?). Is there a good list of cichlids (with pics) anywhere? I know it will vary with the type I get, but about how many cichlids for a 60?
