I have a 75 gallon stocked with.

8- diamond tetras
1-l091 pleco
1- raphael cat
1- rotkeil
1- blue acara

All of these fish are between 2-3.5 inches at this time.

I want to add another cichlid and I am thinking about a JD. Looking for opinions on that and any other recommendations.

Thank you

Going to the store tomorrow, please help me out!

Jd
salvini
firemouth
green terror

?? something else ??

You will have aggression issues by the time those fish reach adulthood. Have another tank ready to remove any problem fish.

I had a sajica in here that i gave to a friend. It was getting behind in growth and was way smaller then the other fish. So I was wanting to replace it with something else. Didnt really think 3 cichlids in a 75 was to much.

If I want a JD who has to go?

Really just a craps shoot, may get a JD that will hang, maybe get a murderous one. Maybe your severum will take offense to the newcomer. Will a JD or Firemouth work? You’ll have to stick one in and find out. Cichlids communities are always a gamble. Your best bet would be 3-4 more acaras and hope the 2 running the tank right now let’s it happen.

To my way of thinking it would be a shame to add any central American cichlid.
All your fish are south American so far and it sounds like a nice harmonious set up.
There are lots of interesting south American fishes you could add and keep your current theme on track.
I agree with others that adding more cichlids could upset the balance.
I would add more tetras or some south American catfish. I often find these supporting cast fish become just as interesting as the cichlids themselves.

Im listening and thank you for the feed back.

I guess a part of me wants something to kick the acaras ass. The tank right now is not exactly harmonious.

Ive already removed an angel and festivum from the tank per advice of this forum. The acara is tank boss and was chasing mainly those 2 fish and it was clear they couldnt hang into the future. Festivum went into another tank and angel was given to a friend. Now the acara chases everyone and I dont like him enough to let him have the whole tank. I think he killed a large male diamond tetra. Saw a bunch of commotion, looked over and blood was streaming out its gill. Ten seconds later he was crashing into the bottom and died like 24 hours latter.

I was wanting a male sajica to be tank boss and then adjust around him. I can not find one around me and ordered the the one I had over the internet when this tank was set up. I ordered a sajica, rotkeil and the l091 to meet the minimum order. This was my first mistake as I should have ordered a bunch of sajicas to increase my chances of getting a healthy male and rehomed the rest. The rotkeil and pleco are healthy and growing. The sajica had an intestinal issue that I was able to cure. The problem was it was just to small and was not growing. It was only a 1/2-3/4" and either a female or stunted from the illness. With the growth rate of the other fish I felt I needed to change up fast before they get to big and I cant find another fish large enough to introduce to the tank. So I gave the sajica away.

The rotkeil is very friendly but its kinda ugly looking and Im hoping it starts to look better as it matures. Its a keeper though as I like its personality. Very friendly and hangs out mid level in the plants.

The sick sajica and ugly rotkeil has put me off ordering fish online. I would rather stick to whats available local and pick the individual fish.

Ive already rearranged the tank and given the acara a nice area to claim and protect. If he would pick an area and defend it I wouldnt have a problem with him. He wants the whole tank and has gotten worse since the festivum and angel were removed. So while they are in the 3" range Im thinking I should add something to challenge him in hopes that he will then just claim an area and not the whole tank. The ideal setup being two clearly defined areas for each fish to defend. Worst case would be another cichlid who claims the whole tank. If thats the case I would rather have a JD tank vs a blue acara tank.

If a firemouth or something else would challenge and at least attempt to fight back and claim an area I will go that route. If there is no chance of that happening I will put a JD or another recommendation in and try the combo and remove the acara if needed.

I need to make a decision before the fish get to big and I have no chance. Do you think a JD will share a 75 with a rotkeil? Do you see a problem with the JD and pleco or catfish?

The diamond tetras can go into any of my tanks if the JD tries to eat them.

Sorry about the book I just wrote!! Your help is appreciated though and Im open to any recommendations.

Thank you

Sounds like the acara is your main problem. Why not remove him?
I still think adding a fish to challenge the acaras dominance may cause you more issues. If the addition of another cichlid challenges the acara it will probably challenge your other fish too.
Would removing the acara and adding a small group of keyholes appeal to you? That may work out.

I have keyholes in another tank. Great fish and get along with everything in my experience. I have amano shrimp with them with no problems.

I guess my goal with this tank was to have a semi aggressive cichlid community. I was thinking the rotkeil for mid water and all over. Two 6-8" cichlids that would claim areas on the bottom with the pleco and catfish. The festivum and angel where never planned to stay in this tank. They were just fill in until the others got bigger. I thought the acara was a good choice to try this with and if anyone became an issue it would be the sajica. I would have been happy to setup around the sajica but that didnt work out.

Now I have a problem acara and it seems like my idea for this type of community is not possible. I am willing to remove the acara but if i do this I would like to replace him with a bigger or better center piece. I would like this fish to possibly get along with the rotkeil, pleco and catfish. I keep going back to the JD in my mind but Im afraid he will just hide all the time. The pleco and catfish already just hide all the time and with a JD I think the tetras would also have to be removed leaving me with only a ugly rotkeil in view.

I dont know what Im going to do. I might just buy one of everything put them in and remove until I get the tank I want. While the fish are small I have enough tanks to move them around until I settle on something. Might just end up with a JD tank if I cant work a community.

Im going to the store this evening. It is an hour drive and I dont want to put it off with Christmas and everything coming so today is the day.

Plan is to buy these fish to try.

1- JD
1- firemouth
