I may be a little late and the chart I refer to may be outdated, but shouldn't amatitlania altoflava, nanolutea, and at least sajica be in bussingius as opposed to amatitlania since they branched off from the same common ancestor as parachromis while actual convict type amatitlania split from amphilophus?

I would check out the cichlid room companion- i consider it to be the source of truth for nomenclature

I do not have access to cichlid room companion as it requires a $100 subscription to access its archives.

Ah I see, in that case I may invest in this with the next bit of money I get.

According to a small blurb in the CRC, Bussingius is considered a synonym for Amatitlania.
And in 2007 was considered a synonym for Cryptoheros.

I acquired access to the CRC thru my membership in the American Cichlid Association.
Beside the CRC access with ACA membership, there is the on -line quarterly journal called the Bunbarsche bulletin, and access to a list of available cichlids from breeders, and other info.

Just to clear things up, when something is considered a synonym, does this mean it can be used interchangeably or does it replace the former name, like in the case of (amatitlania) siquia being synonymous with nigrofasciata?

The official genus name takes precedence, unless scientific peer review changes it.
Although just as in species V.melanura/synspilla.....doesn't mean everyone catches up.
